Minnesota House Democrats are proposing what they call a comprehensive plan to help riot-damaged businesses in the Twin Cities rebuild and recover. Hodan Hassan, who represents the hardest-hit area in southeast Minneapolis, says people are already looking to buy the land. “Their buildings are burned and people are coming in to ask if they want money and just to go away. That’s not the rebuilding we want. We want to make sure Lake Street stays the way it was and even better,” Hassan says.
House Democratic leaders are asking Senate Republicans to remain in special session long enough so the relief package can be passed. Speaker Melissa Hortman says, “We’re working really hard to convince the Senate Republicans that we need to stay until the work is done — and this is really central work of this special session.” Senate GOP leaders say they’ll adjourn the special session by Friday at the latest.
