House Republicans are confident enough they’ll win their lawsuit against Governor Mark Dayton that they’re not planning on meeting with him before the judge rules on the case. The judge strongly hinted the two sides should seek mediation and extended funding for the legislature until October 1st with a temporary injunction against the governor’s veto of operating funds for the House and Senate. That move by the court has given House Speaker Kurt Daudt confidence Republicans will win that case. “Yes, absolutely,” he says.
The governor says the constitution allows him to veto operating funds for the legislature, even if it’s to try to force Republicans to rescind tax cuts the two sides agreed on in budget negotiations. Republicans respond the constitution doesn’t allow the governor to effectively shut down the legislature.
