(Columbia Heights, MN) — Officials have identified a domestic violence suspect shot and killed by officers in Columbia Heights early Tuesday morning as 45-year-old Michael Kirvelay (CUR-vuh-lay) of Montrose. Authorities say officers encountered Kirvelay in the hallway of a business, and at one point he produced a weapon and was shot after ignoring repeated calls to show his hands. The family’s attorney says they believe Kirvelay had a BB gun and the victim’s sister wonders whether police could have used less lethal methods, having shot the suspect in the face four times. Two officers fired their weapons: Columbia Heights Sergeant Erik Johnston — on the force 13 years — and Fridley Officer Shawn Murphy, with the department one year.
