A bill to extend unemployment benefits for out-of-work Iron Range miners is delayed at the state legislature because Republicans also want business tax cuts and Democrats say “no.” House Minority Leader Paul Thissen says “Republicans insisted on getting something for their special-interest corporate patrons.” Republicans respond they support extra unemployment benefits for Iron Range miners, but also want long-term measures to grow jobs in that part of the state. Aitkin Republican Dale Lueck says he doesn’t understand “this continuous unwillingness to simply reach across the aisle. We can have this done in the next 20 minutes,” he says. It’s uncertain whether lawmakers will get a bill to Governor Dayton’s desk in this first week of the 2016 session.
