As the Minnesota State Fair opens, Republican challenger Scott Jensen continues hammering Governor Tim Walz for not agreeing to debate him at the Great Minnesota Get Together. “Tim Walz is gonna dodge his responsibility, and he’s gonna duck every debate he can,” Jensen told a Jewish group Tuesday night.
A Walz campaign spokesman said the governor cannot take part in all debates because of the “sheer quantity” of invitations. Jensen did tell Minnesota News Network last week, “To be fair to Governor Walz, he never looked me in the eye and told me I will be at the State Fair… and I’ll give him that. But he did say there’d be more debates.” And the Jensen campaign says Walz told another media outlet that he would participate in their State Fair debate and backed out.
The Walz campaign says they never withdrew because no debates were ever publicly or privately agreed to, but the spokesman did say “the governor has been clear publicly that there will be more debates.”
