Judge Pete Cahill today is questioning via Zoom the seven jurors seated in the Derek Chauvin trial prior to the publicity around the city of Minneapolis’ $27 million settlement with the family of George Floyd. The settlement and its publicity have become a key issue in the trial so far as the defense has asked to delay the trial and the judge has taken it under advisement. Judge Cahill is still weighing whether to grant the defense’s request to delay or move the trial. And he says he will announce his decision Thursday on whether to allow evidence from George Floyd’s May 2019 arrest into this trial. The judge on Tuesday denied a defense request to sequester the jury during the trial. And he denied the defense’s request for more juror strikes. No jurors were seated on Tuesday. So far, nine jurors have been seated and five still need to be selected. Five of the jurors are white, four are people of color and three are women.
