The jury in the manslaughter trial of Officer Jeronimo Yanez appears to be deadlocked. The judge called jurors back into the courtroom this afternoon and re-read to them instructions regarding deliberations. MNN’s Scott Peterson reports that “the judge did not mention anything about being deadlocked or a hung jury, but the implication around here from some is that that was kind of what he was getting at, is that they seem to not be able to reach an agreement. But there was no mention of that from the judge himself when he spoke to the jury and re-read the instructions to them.”
In front of a packed courtroom, including the families of Philando Castile and Officer Yanez, the judge told jurors to continue to discuss the case with one another and to try to reach agreement in the best of their ability — and not to surrender their honest opinions just because others disagree, or simply to reach a verdict. This is day three of deliberations in Saint Paul.
