Jury selection is underway today in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. The process was delayed Monday as Judge Peter Cahill awaited word from the Minnesota Court of Appeals on the question of whether to allow a third-degree murder charge against Chauvin. Cahill instructed potential jurors that “the defendant, Mr. Chauvin, has been charged with murder in the second degree and manslaughter in the second degree, during the trial, charges in the normal course has been charges might be added to or subtracted to these charges, but those are the charges as it stands.” The appeals court ruling has not come down yet, but Cahill is proceeding. Cahill today instructed jurors that they “are not investigators, you are not to go out and do any looking and you are not to ask people about this matter, you are not to use the Internet to look for information about this case or about the law.” The jury selection process is expected to take several weeks. Chauvin is charged in the May 2020 death of George Floyd. Three other formers are also charged–their trial is set to get underway in August.
