A large number of police, FBI and ATF personnel are responding to a possible shooting incident this afternoon near South Education Center in Richfield. Richfield Middle School officials posted on their website today that at around noon “police and emergency medical support personnel accidentally showed up outside Richfield Middle School in response to an emergency call from the South Education Center. As soon as the mistake was realized, they left for the South Education Center.” The posting goes on to say “the officers had weapons drawn and were in bullet-proof vests. It is unlikely that many students witnessed the event as they were in class at the time.” Governor Tim Walz was slated to hold a press conference nearby, but that event has been canceled. Without offering specifics, Walz says he’s being briefed on the situation and the Department of Public Safety is in touch with local law enforcement. This is a breaking story and more details are expected later today.
