Largest hops farm in MN under development in Foley

July 4, 2016 By Bill Werner

What promoters say is the largest hops farm in the state is being developed in Foley in central Minnesota. Eric Sannerud says he met co-founder Benjamin Boo in college, they both liked beer and had an interest in farming.  Sannerud says, “We started four years ago, grew just like a little bit of hops — like 20 plants, just very little bit of hops — and this fall we’ll be planting 40 thousand. So it’s been a wild ride.”  Mighty Axe Hops is partnering with several companies to design and fund an 80-acre expansion of the farm which is expected to be finished by late fall.  Co-founder Boo says their big customers currently are in the Twin Cities, but “there are a lot of great breweries throughout the state and so we’re kind of taking all comers and we’ll have the volume to work with everybody.”
