Governor Mark Dayton is getting pushback from law enforcement leaders on his suggestion to name a 12-million-dollar police training fund in honor of Philando Castile. After a morning meeting with the governor, Dennis Flaherty — outgoing head of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association — said the law enforcement community doesn’t support it. Flaherty says, “There isn’t any nexus between the police training fund and Philando Castile.” Governor Dayton responded he made the suggestion and the decision rests with the Police Officer Standards and Training Board. He says, “I don’t want that to become the focal point of what I’m trying to do here,” which he says is to get different stakeholders’ perspectives and ideas on how to move forward. The governor says he regrets his remarks were taken as criticism of law enforcement which he calls “totally untrue.”
