State House Republicans today are unveiling their plan to help cut down on childcare fraud. And this afternoon, Republican State Senator Jim Abeler of Anoka is holding a hearing in the wake of a recent news report on apparent fraud in the state childcare assistance program. Abeler says he and Minnesota taxpayers want to know “who’s minding the store?” And he says he intends to ask that question of the Department of Human Services Commissioner, DHS Inspector General, Attorney General and Governor Dayton. And he adds, “there’s much more to this story and we’re going to do our part to look after our section, but I can tell you if we find that people have failed in their jobs, we’re going to push very hard and maybe somebody’s head should roll.” Acting Department of Human Services Commissioner Chuck Johnson says staff has more than doubled over the last several years to try to combat childcare fraud and “we’ve been really aggressive trying to pursue childcare fraud since we first identified this issues in 2012.” A Fox 9 investigative report alleges that several childcare centers in the state are under scrutiny for receiving several million dollars in child care assistance funds–some of which may be going overseas to help terrorist organizations.
