Attorney General Keith Ellison:

“I share the intense grief and anger of so many that another Minnesotan — Alex Pretti, 37 years old, an ICU nurse who served veterans — was fatally shot during the Trump Administration’s Operation Metro Surge. On Monday, my office and I will be in court arguing to end this illegal and unconstitutional occupation of our cities and the terror and violence it’s inflicting. This must stop. Now.”

Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan:

“ICE has shot and killed another Minnesotan. A man was killed today because a reckless paramilitary force has been released on American streets against its own citizens. Everyone should be outraged. We need Trump to remove ICE from Minnesota immediately. Stop killing us.”

Rep. Zack Stephenson (DFL House Leader):

“Another Minnesotan is dead at the hands of federal agents. And why? How many people must die before Donald Trump’s drive for ‘retribution’ is satisfied? The people of Minnesota, from five-year-old children to barely clothed elders, have suffered more than enough. ICE must leave Minnesota now. Full stop.”

Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth’s statement:

“Today we had another tragic loss of life, and I am heartbroken for the loved ones affected. “As we saw yesterday, thousands of Minnesotans were able to peacefully demonstrate without a single incident. Unfortunately there are still too many political leaders urging direct confrontation including the attempted disruption of law enforcement operations and throwing of dangerous objects. These dangerous tactics put lives of officers and the public at risk. We can have protest. We can have lawful monitoring of ongoing law enforcement operations. But it’s going to take leadership at all levels of government to turn down the temperature. I spoke earlier this week with Vice President Vance, who expressed both publicly and privately a sincere desire to foster better cooperation between the federal government and state and local officials.”

Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson (East Grand Forks):

“Today’s events are frustrating and tragic, and we are exhausted that Minnesota is once again in the headlines for violence and chaos. This tragedy is the result of escalating tensions led by Governor Walz, who has used inflammatory rhetoric against law enforcement, called this lawful operation an ‘occupation,’ and encouraged Minnesotans to resist rather than comply with law enforcement. His actions have turned this into a propaganda war. In many states, top leaders fully cooperate with ICE and DHS, and people are safer because of it. I’m calling on all levels of government to come to the table and cooperate to keep people safe. Senate Republicans urge immediate discussions to plan a peaceful path forward and restore order; we can’t wait for more headlines.

Senator Zaynab Mohamed (DFL- Minneapolis):

“The nightmare that Republicans asked for has arrived: Masked, armed, unidentified federal agents are brutalizing Americans and violating our constitutional rights on a daily basis. Three people have been shot, two killed, and thousands of others have been assaulted, disappeared from their homes by masked agents who believe they act with impunity from justice. But Republican leaders are ok with it — because it’s happening to liberals, progressives, and leftists in a blue state. They’re covering for and defending murderers.”

Senator Judy Seeberger (DFL-Afton):

“I am horrified by today’s shooting death of another person by federal agents in Minneapolis. As we wait for more information, Minnesotans deserve the facts about what transpired. This can only be guaranteed by allowing local and state investigators to be a part of the investigation. “Minnesotans are rightfully angry and rightfully scared, as now a second person has died from lethal force by a federal agent. These agents are not making our communities safer; they are bringing chaos to our streets. It is time for our federal partners to pull back from our communities until they show that they have respect for people’s rights and for Minnesotans’ lives.  “We have seen enough horror on our streets today. I ask my fellow Minnesotans to stay safe and to protest peacefully, and I pledge that our state officials will seek the truth about what’s happened.”

Senator Ron Latz (DFL-St. Louis Park):

“I’m horrified by the events this morning in South Minneapolis. I urge Minnesotans to be safe and to respect the efforts of local and state law enforcement partners as they try to maintain the peace. “With another Minnesotan now dead and mounting evidence of widespread abuses of constitutional and human rights by reckless federal agents, I’m calling on ICE to leave our state now before more people are hurt or killed.”
