“We will not be defeated” is the message as dozens of attorneys gathered on the State Capitol steps today (Thurs), voicing opposition to President Trump’s executive order on immigration. John Keller with the Immigrant Law Center says the first four courts looking at the president’s order all granted emergency stays, which he says is very unusual. Keller says, “I cannot recall a moment when that has ever happened — certainly not to the president of the United States in his first week in office.”
Keller says the number of people contacting attorneys because of the president’s ban is “staggering” and he’s never seen that level of fear. He points to a U-S citizen who hired him as her attorney before traveling abroad. Keller says fear gets greater “the farther away you are from citizenship, even though you have every right to be here and may have been here for decades.”
Other groups joining the rally included ACLU Minnesota and the Minnesota Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild.
