Legislative Auditor investigating DHS’s overpayment of $25 million to MN tribes (AUDIO)

August 1, 2019 By Scott Peterson

The State Legislative Auditor is starting an investigation after discovering the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) overpaid the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and the White Earth Nation by more than $25 million for therapy treatments covered under Medicaid. Legislative Auditor Jim Nobles says his office is “in a very preliminary stage of gathering additional information to determine how it happened, why it happened and the magnitude of the overpayment.” DHS officials apparently learned this spring that they overpaid the two tribes to treat substance abuse disorder. The DHS has been under fire for several high-profile controversies–including instances of fraud in its childcare assistance program and the recent resignations of the department commissioner and other high-level staffers.
