Local reaction to Roe v Wade draft leak

May 3, 2022 By Scott Peterson

Local politicians and experts are weighing in today after a draft of a Supreme Court opinion to overturn Roe v Wade was leaked and published Monday by Politico. It shows justices are ready to strike down the 1973 landmark decision that led to the legalization of abortion in the U-S. Phil Kronebusch is a political science professor at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University and an expert on the United States Supreme Court and says, “justices absolutely can change their vote so we don’t know exactly where things are at right now the draft is dated in February so there’s some possibility that the wording has already been changed.” Kronebusch says there are serious questions about who leaked the draft and why, and adds, “this is essentially unprecedented in Supreme Court history that even though these decisions are very important the Supreme Court keeps a lid on them very tightly until the day they’re actually released.” Earlier today, U-S Senator Amy Klobuchar told M-S-N-B-C if the report is true “then we’re literally stripping the women of this country of their rights. If that happens, I think you’re gonna see repercussions like never before .” Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar says “overturning Roe would put the lives of women across the country at risk. It would fly in the face of decades of precedent and the overwhelming majority of public opinion.” Republican Congresswoman Michelle Fischbach calls the leak a seismic and foundational compromise of the independence of the Supreme Court” but says she has faith that Supreme Court Justices will not “bow to intimidation tactics and will adhere to the oath they took upon being sworn in, to ‘faithfully and impartially discharge and perform the duties incumbent upon them under the Constitution. Fischbach also says, “if the Supreme Court does decide to overturn Roe v. Wade, it will put the laws back in the hands of the states to be debated and decided by the American people and their elected representatives, not by unelected judges.”
