Long-time Republican and former George W. Bush ethics lawyer Richard Painter made it official this morning that he’s running–as a Democrat–for the Senate seat formerly held by Al Franken. Painter says he’s “fed up” with the GOP–and in particular, says President Trump “during the campaign demonstrated that he was a threat to our Constitution.” Painter says “the problem in the Republican party is that they’ve made it very clear, that nobody is welcome to be a candidate for a national office who does not support Donald Trump.” Republicans call Painter a “Trump-hating impeachment advocate.” Painter says he doesn’t hate Trump, but says of his election in 2016 “we have not heard such rhetoric in a presidential campaign since the 1932 election, and that’s not the 1932 election between Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, it was the 1932 election in Germany.” Painter, who is a corporate law professor at the University of Minnesota, faces current Senator–and Democrat–Tina Smith and Republican State Senator Karin Housley for the seat. Housley says Painter’s entrance into the race “brings Minnesotans more of the same from the Democratic Party – extremism, obstruction, and values out of touch with hardworking Minnesotans. ”
