A 70-year-old man from Long Beach, California has a court appearance Thursday morning, facing manslaughter and other charges for a fire ignited by a hot stove in the back of his van that spread to another vehicle, fatally injuring a six-year-old girl and severely burning her nine-year-old sister. Investigators say Roberto Hipolito and his wife had slept overnight in the van in the parking lot of a Walmart in Fridley. He used the cookstove out on the pavement that morning but, without allowing enough time for it to cool, put it back into the rear of the van — and later admitted to investigators that he tossed pillows and blankets near the stove. Within minutes, the van was on fire, along with one next to it where the two girls were reportedly sleeping while their mother was inside the store shopping.
