The Mayo Clinic is out with its latest National Health Checkup. The survey asked consumers about their attitudes and perceptions of cancer. Dr. Minetta Liu is a Mayo Oncologist and says the good news is that people are hopeful about the ability to treat cancer and the potential for a cure. But Liu says the flip side is that “with respect to prevention and screening, the fact that people have concerns about costs and time away from work and family as the barriers toward seeking care.” Liu says doctors and patients–and communities as a whole need to work together on removing these barriers. Around 95-percent of respondents in the Checkup say they take at least one preventative measure to avoid cancer. Liu calls that a good start, but there’s even more we can do.
