Mayor Frey releases body camera footage of Blevins shooting

July 29, 2018 By Scott Peterson

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has released video footage from the body cameras in the fatal June 23rd officer-involved shooting of Thurman Blevins. Three video files were made public Sunday night–two raw videos and a “stabilized and analyzed video.” The raw footage comes directly from responding officers Justin Schmidt’s and Ryan Kelly’s body cameras. The stabilized and analyzed video was produced by the National Center for Audio & Video Forensics in Beverly Hills, California, as contracted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), and provided to the City of Minneapolis by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office. The National Center for Audio & Video Forensics ran this video through a stabilizing and analysis process. Mayor Frey had said the video would be released by the end of the month in the interest of full transparency. Thurman Blevins’ family members and community activists had been calling for the video to be released. Some have also called for the officers involved to be charged in Blevins’ death.

All three files along with additional public information related to the officer-involved shooting can be accessed here. Please be advised, the footage is graphic and not suitable for young people or sensitive viewers.
