State health officials are on alert after finding four cases of teens and young adults with severe lung disease possibly related to vaping. State epidemiologist Dr. Ruth Lynfield says the cases here are similar to cases recently reported in Wisconsin and Illinois, though it is too early to say whether they are connected. She says when the patients were first hospitalized “they were evaluated for infectious causes of their very severe respiratory symptoms, and it turns out that that was negative.” But she says upon further working with the patients, it was discovered they’d been vaping. Dr. Lynfield is urging health care officials and parents to watch for symptoms of damage from vaping–including shortness of breath, fever, cough, and in some cases dizziness and chest pains.
