There are now 24 confirmed cases of measles in Minnesota — all involving Somali children in Hennepin County between the ages of zero and five. All but one of the cases are confirmed to be unvaccinated. Kris Ehresman with the state Health Department says measles start with a cough, runny nose and watery eyes, and then a rash a couple of days after a person is infected and “that’s one of the reasons why, when we have cases of measles that we really want to identify contacts and reach out to those individuals so they realize that if they do develop that set of non-specific symptoms that they need to be not out and about.” The Health Department is recommending parents check their kids’ immunization records and make sure they’ve been vaccinated for measles.
