>>Minnesota Employers Encouraged to Cash Worker’s Comp Surplus Checks
(St. Paul, MN) — Employers who have workers comp insurance through the Workers’ Compensation Reinsurance Association are being urged to check whether they have unclaimed money. The WCRA issued 90,000 surplus distribution checks totaling $ 35 million to policyholders in December of 2022. Approximately 15,000 checks totaling $ 3 million remain uncashed. The WCRA was created 42 years ago by the Minnesota legislature to provide workers’ compensation insurance at a fair price.
>>Newborn Screening Updates
(St. Paul, MN) — The state Health Department has added three conditions to the list of over 60 that it routinely screens newborns for. Parents can refuse to have babies tested, but Newborn Screening Program Manager Jill Simonetti says they don’t recommend that option, particularly because parents can also have test results destroyed. Last year the state Health Department screened over 62-thousand newborns and advised early intervention and treatment for about 400.
>>Tent Fire Sends Four to the Hospital
(Maple Lake, MN) — Four people suffered burns after a tent caught fire in Maple Lake Sunday night. Deputies arrived to discover two women and two juvenile girls had been inside the tent when it caught fire. One of the women was using an aerosol can for an art project when the fumes were ignited by an insect-repellent candle just outside of the tent. A 20-year-old victim was taken to HCMC with severe burns to her legs. A 37-year-old woman was taken to Buffalo Hospital for 2nd-degree burns to her foot, hand, and forearm. A 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl were brought to the Buffalo Hospital by family members for the treatment of minor burns.
>>Sheriff Releases Name of Man Found in Roadway
(St. Michael, MN) — The Wright County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man whose body they found in the roadway in St. Michael. 36-year-old Kyle Dixon of St. Michael was possibly walking when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver near Ochoa Avenue Northeast. The sheriff is asking for anyone who might have surveillance video or may have been in the area between 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Friday to contact the Wright County Sheriff’s Department.
>>Moorhead House Fire
(Moorhead, MN) — An early-morning fire (4 a.m.) has left a house in Moorhead heavily damaged. When fire crews arrived, flames were coming from the roof and caused the roof to collapse. The house was under renovation, and no one was inside the home when it caught fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
>>Trucker Injured in Rollover Crash
(Clay County, MN) — A Beet truck driver was injured in a crash late Monday night north of Dilworth in Clay County. The extent of the trucker’s injuries is not available. He was airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Fargo by AirMed. The preliminary investigation indicates the driver may have been distracted by equipment in the truck’s cab and rolled into a deep ditch.
