(Duluth, MN) — Burning restrictions are now in effect for five counties in far northern Minnesota. Large debris and yard waste fires are temporarily prohibited in Cook, Koochiching (KOO’-chuh-ching), Lake, Lake of the Woods, and northern St. Louis counties. The D-N-R warns that dry conditions combined with strong winds can increase wildfire risk. Restrictions are already in place for 42 other Minnesota counties.

(St. Paul, MN) — A St. Paul man is facing federal prison time for dealing large amounts of fentanyl from Arizona in Minnesota. Kurtis Gordon-Greenwood was convicted on charges including conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and illegal possession of a firearm. Investigators intercepted a U-P-S package from Arizona in 2022 containing more than five kilos – or 50 thousand fentanyl pills – addressed to Gordon-Greenwood’s apartment. Authorities also seized a package that he sent to Arizona that had more than $ thousand cash, a nine-millimeter pistol with an extended magazine, and three cell phones inside. His sentencing hearing hasn’t been scheduled.

(South St. Paul, MN) — Dakota County authorities are still investigating a deadly weekend shooting in South St. Paul. The victim died of a gunshot wound Friday night. Officers say they arrested a 33-year-old Hudson, Wisconsin man at the scene. Investigators say the victim and alleged shooter are known to each other. The Minnesota BCA is working with the South St. Paul PD on the case.

(Undated) — Registration is now open for the Minnesota D-N-R’s “I Can!” programs. Supervisor Eric Pelto says the programs help remove barriers by giving people who may not have access to the outdoors a peek into what Minnesota’s parks offer. Programs include introductions to camping, fishing, mountain biking, and canoeing or kayaking. More information, including how to register, can be found on the D-N-R’s website.

(Undated) — The U of M highlights the importance of stress management during Stress Awareness Month. Dr. Justin Anker says some long-term impacts of stress include increased risk for heart disease, depression, anxiety, and substance misuse. Anker also says there are some common misconceptions regarding stress, like that it’s all in your head or that you can just power through it. Anker says it’s also best to avoid a “quick fix” for stress like alcohol or other substances. Exercise, mindfulness practices, social support, and setting realistic goals are better options for dealing with stress.

(Falcon Heights, MN) — The Avett (AY’-vit) Brothers are attending the Minnesota State Fair this summer. The Milk Carton Kids are the opening act for the August 29th grandstand show. The Avett Brothers play guitar, banjo, bass, drums, and fiddle; the critics call their music folk-rock or bluegrass. Tickets for the State Fair show go on sale this Friday through Etix.
