(Washington, DC) — A resolution created by Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, designed to undo President Trump’s 25 percent tariff on most imports from Canada, is advancing. The measure narrowly passed last night out of the upper chamber with support from four Republican senators. Klobuchar said any tariff on Canada would hurt Minnesota by driving up prices and eliminating jobs. It’s not clear what is next for the resolution and if it will make it to the Republican-controlled U.S. House floor for a vote.

(Washington, DC) — Minnesota Congresswoman Angie Craig is speaking out against the new global tariffs imposed on foreign imports by the Trump administration. The ranking Democrat on the U-S House Ag Committee says in a statement, “Increasing input costs, shutting farmers out of export markets and causing middle-class families to pay more at the grocery store is not a winning strategy.” G-O-P Congressman Tom Emmer is cheering President Trump’s tariff announcement. The House majority whip says on social media, “For too long, foreign countries have taken advantage of us at the expense of American workers.”

(St. Paul, MN) – An Equal Rights Amendment bill is getting another chance this legislative session. DFL Representative Leigh Finke (fink-ee) of St. Paul presented the proposal today in front of the House State Government Committee. The bill would create a state constitutional amendment to protect against discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin, disability, gender identity, and others. The bill this morning was laid over for future consideration. The past two legislative sessions have failed to pass the measure. If it passes this time, the issue will be put on the general election ballot for voters to decide in 2026.

(Chanhassen, MN) — The winter storm warnings are over, and parts of northern and west central Minnesota are digging out from more than a foot of snow. The National Weather Service says Fergus Falls received 15 inches; Hackensack, Deer Creek and Two Harbors have about 12 inches; the Detroit Lakes area, Knife River and Wadena got 10-and-a-half inches; the Brainerd lakes area reports 9 inches; Little Falls, Grand Rapids and Moorhead 7 inches; and St. Cloud half-a-foot of snow. The Twin Cities and southern Minnesota had one to three inches.

(Fergus Falls, MN) — A man from Underwood in northwestern Minnesota has been sentenced for having hundreds of grams in illegal drugs. 24-year-old Zachary Seaburg was arrested last September after State Troopers say they found a bag of drugs in his vehicle during a traffic stop in Fergus Falls. Court documents say troopers found 264 grams of methamphetamine, 24 grams of cocaine, and suspected fentanyl in the black bag. They also say there were needles and a baggie of M30 fentanyl pills in the car’s center console. Seaburg was sentenced to more than five years in the Minnesota Correctional Facility in St. Cloud for 1st Degree Drug Possession. He pleaded guilty to the charge in February as part of a plea agreement with Otter Tail County prosecutors.

(Virginia, MN) — Duluth-based Essentia Health is expanding its emergency department in Virginia. The 13-million-dollar investment on the Iron Range will increase the hospital’s ER capacity from seven to 12 rooms, including a separate four-room unit equipped for patients in mental health crises. Renovations are expected to be complete in late 2026.

(Minneapolis, MN) — A Minneapolis hotel is facing its second lawsuit. A plaintiff accuses the former owner of Hotel Ivy of having a part in a sex trafficking scheme. The lawsuit was filed yesterday, and it claims that the hotel was involved in the sex trafficking case against Anton Tony Lazzaro, who was convicted in 2023. The suit accuses the hotel of not responding to obvious signs of sex trafficking of teenage girls by Lazzaro. Last December, another one of Lazzaro’s victims filed a similar lawsuit.

The 2-and-4 Twins were swept in St. Louis to open the season but took two of three games from the White Sox in Chicago. The Houston Astros are also 2-and-4 following a loss Wednesday to the San Francisco Giants. Joe Ryan is the starting pitcher for Minnesota this afternoon, and right-hander Hunter Brown is on the mound for Houston.
