(Arrowhead Twp, MN) — A man from Blackduck and three female passengers were killed Wednesday afternoon when a trucker slammed into a string of vehicles stopped for road construction about 30 miles west of Duluth on Highway 2 in Arrowhead Township. Two semis and three S-U-Vs with nine people total were involved. The State Patrol says the semi-driver “struck the stopped vehicles at highway speeds” in a construction zone. 65-year-old Vincent Dow died in the crash; the names of his passengers also killed have not yet been released. The trucker, 63-year-old Gregory Anwiler of Grand Rapids, had non-critical injuries. The patrol says a passenger in a different S-U-V, an 84-year-old woman from Grand Rapids, and the driver of the other semi, a 45-year-old man from Rochester, survived their injuries, and three others were unhurt. Road conditions were dry, and the State Patrol hasn’t yet said why the semi-driver didn’t stop.

(Undated) — Vice Presidential candidates Tim Walz and JD Vance have agreed to at least one debate. The Minnesota governor and Ohio senator will face off in a debate hosted by CBS News on October 1st. The network announced Wednesday on social media that it had proposed four different dates for a debate, with Walz replying, “See you on October 1, JD.” In a post on X today, Vance said he has agreed to the CBS debate as well as a debate hosted by CNN on September 18th. So far, there has been no response from the Harris-Walz campaign regarding the September debate.

(Newport, RI) — Governor Tim Walz is in Newport, Rhode Island, and Southhampton, New York, today (Thurs) as he wraps up his solo fundraising sweep for the Harris-Walz ticket that’s visiting five states in three days. On Saturday, Walz goes to Omaha in his home state of Nebraska for a campaign event. He was born in West Point, about 50 miles northwest of that city, raised in Valentine, and graduated from Butte High School in north-central Nebraska. Walz taught for six years in Nebraska, where he met his wife, Minnesota First Lady Gwen Walz before they moved to her home state of Minnesota.

(St. Paul, MN) — Minnesota’s unemployment rate increased slightly last month to 3.2 percent. One-thousand-100 jobs were lost across the state in July. Minnesota’s unemployment rate is still lower than the national rate of 4.3%, which also increased this month, and the state’s labor force participation rate (67.8%) continues to be among the highest in the country. Three of Minnesota’s 11 supersectors gained jobs last month, led by Education & Health Services, which added 4,300 jobs. Six supersectors lost jobs, including Trade, Transportation & Utilities, down 2,400 jobs; Leisure & Hospitality, down 2,000; and Financial Activities, down 1,100. Over the year, Minnesota has gained more than 29,200 payroll jobs.
