(Minneapolis, MN) — There’s a growing memorial outside Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis following Wednesday’s mass shooting. The community placed candles, stuffed animals, flowers, notes, and ribbons around the trees to honor the 19 people shot. Hundreds turned out for vigils last night at Lynnhurst Park and at Academy of Holy Angels High School in Richfield. The Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis is hosting an interfaith prayer service at 5:30 this evening (Thurs). It is open to the public and will be livestreamed at mary.org.

(Undated) – The family of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark has issued a statement following the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on Wednesday. The family says, “Our hearts are with the parents, families, and friends of the victims of this senseless act of violence. No one should have to suffer the loss of a loved one to gun violence.” The family went on to say that Melissa and Mark believed that children should be able to gather in schools safely, that communities should be able to worship in peace, and that families should be safe in their homes. They also urged elected officials to take action towards common sense on access to high-powered weapons.

(Walker, MN) — The Cass County Sheriff’s Office is identifying the woman who died in a boat crash on Tuesday on Leech Lake. Deputies say 59-year-old Theresa Cechini of Cass Lake was found unresponsive and died as paramedics were treating her on the way to the Walker Airport. The medical examiner’s report indicates she suffered a medical emergency before the crash. Cechini’s boat crashed into some rocks near Walker City Park along the south shore of the lake.

(Eden Valley, MN) — Two people were injured, one seriously, after a car and a side-by-side ATV collided Wednesday evening near Eden Valley. The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office says a 16-year-old from Litchfield was driving northbound when their vehicle struck an ATV, also heading north. The ATV was driven by 61-year-old Daniel Sullivan of rural Watkins, with 61-year-old Janet Sullivan as a passenger. Daniel was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital with serious injuries. Janet was taken by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

(Minneapolis, MN) — University of Minnesota researchers are exploring whether naturally occurring fungi could help control buckthorn, an invasive species that threatens native ecosystems in the Midwest. In a recent study, scientists identified 120 fungal species from dying buckthorn at 19 sites in Minnesota and Wisconsin—46 of which are known to cause cankers or root rot in woody plants. Ongoing tests are evaluating how well these fungi infect healthy buckthorn. If effective, they could offer an alternative to chemical herbicides, which aren’t ideal for sensitive environments. Larger field trials are planned to assess the fungi’s potential as a natural control method.
