>>Law Enforcement From MN, WI Preparing for Biden Visit To Superior
(Superior, WI) — Law enforcement officers from Minnesota and Wisconsin are helping with security preparations ahead of President Biden coming to Superior, Wisconsin tomorrow. Even though the focus is on Wisconsin, the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says there will be streets shut down on both sides of the Twin Ports area during the visit. Biden is expected to talk about his Investing in America agenda and will likely mention the recent award of just over a billion dollars in federal aid to help with the reconstruction of the Blatnik Bridge.
>>8th Annual Guns and Hoses Charity Game
(Blaine, MN) — Minnesota police officers will face off against firefighters in the eighth annual Guns and Hoses charity game next month in Blaine. Lino Lakes Public Safety Executive Director Wes Pederson says this event represents so much more than a hockey game. He says it’s the community’s way to pay it forward and say thank you. The proceeds from the event will go to the Front-Line Foundation which awards grants to the families of first responders who die in the line of duty. Organizers are expecting about a thousand people for the February 23rd game at the Super Rink in Blaine.
>>Congresswoman Craig Pushes to Eliminate Federal Income Tax
(Washington, D.C.) — Second District Congresswoman Angie Craig unveils details tomorrow (Thurs) of her bill to eliminate *federal* income tax on Social Security benefits, regardless of income. It’s been Republicans at the Minnesota Legislature who have been pushing, so far without success, for eliminating *state* income tax on Social Security benefits. Democrats at the State Capitol during the last session agreed to a partial rollback, but not for the highest-income Minnesotans. Congresswoman Craig, who’s also a Democrat, is pushing for the complete elimination of federal tax on Social Security benefits, but it appears she’s proposing to counterbalance the loss of those tax revenues by changing the tax brackets for the Social Security payroll tax — which would likely affect higher-income people and could encounter resistance from Republicans who control the U-S House of Representatives.
>>Minnetonka Graduate School Begins Training Police Therapists
(Minnetonka, MN) — A graduate school in Minnetonka is now training therapists with a focus on helping with the mental health needs of Minnesota law enforcement officers. The state legislator allotted funding for the program last year, and the Adler Graduate School began training mental health professionals this month. Once they graduate, those professionals will be added to a list that will be given to every police department and sheriff’s office. Officials hope the program will lead to better health for officers and better policing throughout the state.
