>>BWCA Bear-Safe Food Storage

(Undated) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture is extending for another five years an order requiring bear‑safe food storage in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.  Joy Van Drie of the Superior National Forest said the goal of the rule is to keep bears from becoming dependent on human food. The order requires campers to hang food, food containers, scented hygiene items, and food waste at least 12 feet off the ground and at least six feet horizontally from the trunk of a tree. Van Drie said the requirements make it much harder for bears to access human food. Campers may also store food and other items in certified bear‑resistant containers.
