Walz ruled out a run for the U-S Senate in 2026.

(Ortonville, MN) — A South Dakota man is dead after his vehicle broke through the ice on Big Stone Lake in western Minnesota. The Big Stone County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a pickup went through the ice Sunday morning and no one emerged from the water. First responders were called to the scene and divers from the Big Stone Fire Department located someone inside the truck. Deputies say 62-year-old Rodney Gustafson from Big Stone City, South Dakota was airlifted to a Fargo hospital where he died. Authorities are reminding everyone that ice conditions are deteriorating on area lakes.

(Washington, DC) — Congressman Tom Emmer is inviting House Speaker Lisa Demuth and two members of the 1980 ‘Miracle on Ice’ hockey team to President Trump’s joint address to Congress. Emmer says Team U-S-A Olympic gold medalists Buzz Schneider and Rob McClanahan will be joining him Tuesday night along with Demuth. The 45th anniversary of the Americans’ upset win over the Soviets at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics was last month (2/22/80). Schneider and McClanahan also won national championships playing for U-S coach Herb Brooks at the University of Minnesota.

(Ramsey, MN) — Anoka County investigators say a Brooklyn Park man is the victim of a fatal shooting in the city of Ramsey. Police found 18-year-old Diamond Manly slumped over in a car Sunday morning with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers say Manly’s death is considered a homicide and they’re looking for suspects. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Anoka County dispatch or the Ramsey Police Department.

(St. Paul, MN) – Local governments across Minnesota are seeking funds for cybersecurity amid rising threats. Maple Grove DFL Representative Kristin Bahner has authored a bill to create a state-funded local government cybersecurity grant program. Grants would be available for cities, counties or towns with a population greater than 5,000. Communities could use the grant funding for things like storage and backup solutions, email filtering solutions, and antivirus and endpoint protection. If passed, the program would start in 2026 with $20 million from the state’s General Fund.

(St. Paul, MN) – Minnesota is seeing an increase in demand for nursing care. U of M Associate Professor of Health Care Management Lacey Loomer says one of the reasons for the increase is simply that we are living longer. Loomer says one challenge facing the industry is low wages and benefits, and there aren’t enough people to meet the increased demand. Loomer also says the increased demand disproportionally impacts Greater Minnesota, and rural counties have 41% fewer nursing home beds than twenty years ago. There are currently 101,000 people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in Minnesota.

In the past year, nine million people in Minnesota turned to food banks, marking a 20 percent increase compared to 2023. Officials emphasize the importance of receiving sufficient donations to fill the shelves this year. Inflation has contributed to a public food shortage at the Salvation Army. Community members are encouraged to drop off non-perishable, unexpired food items at their local Salvation Army locations.
