Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime emergency due to the severe weather today (Wed) and authorized National Guard soldiers to provide support. Some areas of southeastern Minnesota have received ten inches of snow, and strong winds are creating blizzard conditions in rural areas. There are reports of stranded motorists. The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office requested the state assistance.

(Toronto, CA) — A Canadian premier threatens to cut off U.S. electricity exports over the current tariff war, which could impact some Minnesota customers. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the U.S. needs to “feel the pain,” adding he would cut the power with a smile on his face. A report shows Ontario powered one-and-a-half-million U.S. homes in 2023, mainly in Minnesota, New York, and Michigan. Ford says if the Trump Administration follows through on any more tariffs, we will immediately apply a 25% surcharge on the electricity we export. President Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China took effect Tuesday.

(Washington, DC) — The TSA is expecting a busy spring break travel season this year. The agency predicts the peak travel period will be tomorrow (Thursday) through March 24th. We will see a five-percent increase in travel over last year. The busiest travel days during the spring break will likely be Fridays and Sundays. Nearly three million passengers could be screened on those days.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota DNR reminds fish house owners that shelters in the state’s northern third must be removed from the ice by March 17th. DNR Enforcement Captain Mike Martin says owners worried about meeting the deadline should plan to remove the shelters early. If the shelters are not removed by the 17th, owners could be fined, and the shelters could be removed or destroyed. The DNR also asks owners to clean up all trash and remove everything from the ice when they leave. The deadline to remove fish houses on the Minnesota-Canada border is March 31st.

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Boys State High School Hockey Tournament begins today (Wednesday) with Class A quarterfinals at the Xcel Energy Center. Defending champion St. Cloud Cathedral plays Mahtomedi in the first matchup (11 a.m.), Northfield faces Orono in the second game at 1 p.m., Hibbing-Chisholm-VCA takes on Luverne at 6 p.m., and Northern Lakes skates against East Grand Forks in the late quarterfinal game (8 p.m.). The Class 2-A quarterfinals face off Thursday in St. Paul.
