(St. Paul, MN) – The last five search kits have been placed with the Lower Sioux Tribal Police Department to help law enforcement and community members search for missing persons safely. Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR) Director Ana Negrete says the idea began in February 2023 following an unsuccessful search for a 47-year-old Mille Lacs man. The kit includes 10 GPS devices, two-way radios, high-visibility vests, walking sticks, traditional medicine including sage, cedar, and sweetgrass, first aid kits, and some seasonal items. Negrete says the following spring, a search for the same victim, now with a kit in hand, was successful. Search kits are available in four Tribal nations, and an additional kit is in St. Paul at the MMIR office.
