>>Minnesota AG Ellison’s Tariff Challenge Reaches U.S. Supreme Court
(Washington, D.C.) — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is among a coalition of 12 states appearing before the U.S. Supreme Court today(WED) to challenge President Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs. The case could redefine executive limits on economic decisions. Filed in April by Minnesota and 11 other states, the suit targets tariffs affecting imports from Canada, Mexico, China, and others. Lower courts sided with the states, ruling the tariffs unlawful. The federal government appealed, and the Supreme Court agreed to an expedited review.

It’s the first proposed increase in more than 30 years, since the federal checkoff was set at one dollar per head nationwide. If approved, the extra funds would support beef research, promotion, and consumer outreach in Minnesota. Producers could request a refund of the additional 50 cents if they choose. Dairy cows used for milk production are exempt, but those sold for slaughter, including veal calves, would be subject to the fee. Producers must request a ballot to vote in the referendum.
