Midday Headlines November 8th, 2023

November 8, 2023 By Tasha Redel

>>School Bond and Levy Results

(St. Paul, MN) — The preliminary results show two-thirds of the school bond issues and levies were approved by voters in Tuesday’s election.   Greg Abbott with the Minnesota School Boards Association says “30 of 45 bond or capital project levies passed which is really good.  The big questions were approved: Osseo’s 223 million, South Washington’s 250 million combined, even Mankato’s 105 million.” Abbott says many of the referendums or levies that failed were in smaller districts in rural Minnesota.

>>Major Renovations at MSP

(Bloomington, MN0 — The largest makeover ever at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is about to begin.  The Metropolitan Airports Commission and Delta Airlines are partnering on $242 million in interior renovations to transform six concourses and 75 gate areas in Terminal 1. The multi-year project will be the largest interior renovation of passenger gate areas and concourses since it opened in 1962. Officials say they are creating a brighter, more modern gateway to elevate the passenger experience. A public launch of the renovations will be held tomorrow. The MAC will also update other 2024 Terminal 1 projects that will be coinciding with the Airport Modernization Program which will streamline check-in and security processes, expand passenger facilities, and improve airline capacity.

>>Measurable Snowfall in Northeastern Minnesota, Arrowhead

(Grand Marais, MN) — There’s fresh snow on the ground today (Wed) in parts of northeastern Minnesota and along the North Shore.    The National Weather Service in Duluth reports five inches fell in Grand Marais and four-point-eight in Hovland .  Ely and Cook are reporting two inches, one-point-six in Finland and just under an inch in Embarrass.  Areas farther south saw mostly rain overnight and this morning.

>>Wahpeton father and son honored for life-saving rescue involving fiery crash in Clay County

(Clay County, MN) — Travis Owens and his 19-year-old son, Hunter Owens, of Wahpeton, North Dakota, have been honored for the rescue of a truck driver involved in a fiery crash south of Sabin, Minnesota last month. The driver, Jase Kelly, had fallen asleep at the wheel because of a long shift working the sugar beet harvest. He drove off a county road and the semi violently struck a tree. Kelly was still inside the truck and it caught fire. Travis and Hunter were driving down the road, saw the fully involved truck, stopped, and without regard to his own safety, Travis pulled Kelly from the semi and moved him to safety. Hunter helped his father by getting a knife to cut the seatbelt and calling 911 to report the crash. Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting presented the father and son the awards by the Sheriff’s office. He thanked them for their courage to stop and help that day. He said, “There’s no doubt that your actions on October 8 definitely saved a life.”
