>>Annual SS Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial Friday
(Two Harbors, MN) –The Split Rock Lighthouse on the North Shore hosts its annual SS Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial on Friday. The yearly gathering honors the 29 who died in 1975 after a storm sunk the vessel on Lake Superior. The event also highlights the history of the 113-year-old structure, which was commissioned after a 1905 storm. Site manager Hayes Scriven says “Split Rock is a result of that storm, trying to make the lake safer. When the lighthouse was built and in operation from 1910 to 1969, there were no wrecks in the vicinity, so they knew it proved its point.” Scriven says guided tours, informational videos, and ceremonial beacon lighting are all things visitors can expect. >>Minnesota man helps find lost dogs using thermal drone technology
(St. Cloud, MN) — A joyful reunion between an owner and his missing dog was captured on video over the weekend by a thermal drone of the man who helped find the pup on a St. Cloud golf course. The video shows Angie racing towards her owner, running happy circles around him after having escaped from a grooming appointment the previous day. Jonathan McGowan is a civil engineer but uses his free time and thermal drone to travel around the region, helping pet owners in need through his company, Integral Camera Solutions. He says “A lot of it just involves me searching on lost pet groups on Facebook and looking for cases that I think I have a chance of success in.”
McGowan says he does this for free, but most of the people he helps donate money to cover some of his costs. He says he’s had a few successes but nothing as inspiring as last weekend’s reunion of Angie and her owner.
