>>6 St. Paul Officers Identified in Use-of-Force Incident Resulting in Man Shot

(St. Paul, MN) — Six St. Paul police officers have been identified as using force in an incident Tuesday where a man was shot. Officers Austin Borowicz and Peov Suon fired 40mm less-lethal rounds, Officers Shawn Marlowe and Blake Steffen discharged their rifles, and Officer Chase Robinson and Sergeant Lamichael Shead discharged their rifles. All officers involved are on critical incident leave. The man shot was identified as 40-year-old Earl Bennett, who has no permanent address but has been staying in the Twin Cities metro. Bennett remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.

(Afton, MN) — An off-duty Washington County sheriff’s deputy is accused of causing a crash while driving drunk Sunday in Afton. The Minnesota State Patrol says the 58-year-old man from Hastings crossed over the center skip stripe on Highway 95 and collided head-on with an SUV. Both drivers and a passenger in the SUV were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The report on the deputy says alcohol was involved in the crash.

 

>>Minneapolis Man Sentenced to 1.5 Years in Federal Prison for Insider Trading Conspiracy 

(Minneapolis, MN) — A Minneapolis man has been sentenced to one and a half years in federal prison and 320 hours of community service for an insider trading conspiracy. From January 2018 to at least August 2020, 69-year-old Doron “Ron” Tavlin and a co-conspirator were involved in nonpublic information trading about the acquisition of Mazor Robotics, an Israeli-based medical company, and Medtronic, Inc. Tavlin tipped off information about his former employer, Mazor Robotics, to his co-conspirator to buy shares in the company before the sale was public. The morning after, they sold the shares and made a $246,000 profit. Tavlin was found guilty of one count of conspiracy and ten counts of securities fraud on February 16th.

(Morris, MN) – Political fallout continues after a comedian at former President Donald Trump’s Sunday rally in New York City called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” University of Minnesota Morris political science Professor Tim Lindberg says the biggest potential for that to make a difference is in battleground state Pennsylvania, which has a “pretty sizable” Puerto Rican population. Trump told Fox News he doesn’t know the comedian who made the offensive jokes, and critics are taking someone who “has nothing to do with us” and trying to make it a big deal, adding, “I can’t imagine that it’s a big deal.”

(Undated) – With the election just days away, the hottest MN House race continues to be the 2nd Congressional District. Carleton College analyst Steven Schier says an early October poll showed Democratic incumbent Angie Craig ahead 49% to 41%, but Republican challenger Joe Tierab was still within striking distance. Schier says another thing to notice “is that the Democratic leader of the (U.S.) House (Hakeem Jeffries) was here recently campaigning with Angie Craig,” which suggests to me that they see this as an area of concern.” Schier says while Craig is favored, “there could be some possibility of an upset.”

(Roseville, MN) — The Minnesota Lottery has reached $4 billion returned to the state to help positively impact the lives of Minnesotans. The funds support expanding outdoor recreational activities, local agriculture, restoring wildlife habitats, and protecting water quality across the state. In 2024 alone, a record payout of $196.5 million was returned to lottery beneficiaries. Over $101.7 million went to Minnesota’s General Fund, $93.3 million toward protecting MN’s environment and natural resources, $50.7 million to the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, $20.5 million to the Game and Fish Fund, $22.1 million to the Natural Resources Fund, and $1.5 million to help prevent and treat problem gambling.

(Undated) – The Minnesota State Patrol is warning drivers this is a peak time for deer-car accidents in the state. Sergeant Jesse Graybow with the State Patrol says your passengers should be on the lookout too when driving. He notes, “An extra set of eyes to keep an eye on what’s up the road, noticing the shining of the eyes or the silhouette, so just pay attention, and if it looks like it could be a hazard, then start slowing down to recognize the hazards and problems up the road.” Graybow says deer are most active between 6-9 p.m.

 

>>Minnesota Twins 1st Baseman/Outfielder Kirilloff Retires from Baseball

(Minneapolis, MN) — Minnesota Twins first baseman and outfielder Alex Kirilloff is retiring from baseball. 26-year-old Kirilloff was limited to 57 games last season due to a back injury. Kiriloff says in a statement, “During my career, I’ve encountered numerous injuries, which led me to search for new ways to overcome the pain constantly. These challenges have taken a toll on me mentally and physically; over time, I’ve realized that my passion for playing the game has shifted.” He was a first-round draft pick of the Twins in 2016 and played 249 career games over four seasons with Minnesota.
