>>Spring Grove Man Dies in Southeast Minnesota House Fire 

(Spring Grove, MN) — Authorities in southeastern Minnesota are trying to determine the cause of a deadly house fire in Spring Grove. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office says firefighters from three departments were called to the fire Monday afternoon. Deputies say the body of 62-year-old Karl Onstad was found inside the burning home shortly after first responders got there. Foul play is not suspected in Onstad’s death.

 

>>New Ulm Man Killed in Drainage Ditch Crash in Meeker County 

(Cosmos, MN) — A man from New Ulm is the victim of a fatal crash Tuesday west of Hutchinson in Meeker County. The Minnesota State Patrol says a pickup driven by 71-year-old David Hermel drove off Highway 4 and went into the drainage ditch. Troopers say Hermel died at the scene. The report indicates he wasn’t wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was not involved.

 

>>SW MN Man Charged After Deadly ATV Crash

(Lismore, MN) — A man from southwest Minnesota is facing charges after a fatal ATV crash over the weekend. 35-year-old Calvin Loosbrock was arrested by the Nobles County Sheriff’s Office following the Saturday crash in Lismore. Investigators reported that Loosbrock was intoxicated when he drove an ATV with three passengers into a ditch. 43-year-old Sara Pittman from Fairmont passed away as a result of the crash. Loosbrock is charged with multiple counts of vehicular homicide and manslaughter in connection with the incident.

 

>>MPCA Fines American Crystal Sugar Company

(St. Paul, MN) — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has fined American Crystal Sugar Company $12,000 for air permit violations at its Moorhead sugar beet processing plant. The MPCA says Crystal failed emissions performance tracking stack tests on two boilers in the fall of last year. Reports submitted by the company confirmed several emission deviations. It occurred 121 times during 414 testing periods in the first half of 2022. In addition to paying the civil penalty, American Crystal completed a series of corrective actions.

 

>>Part of BWCAW Closed Due To Wildfire

(Ely, MN) — Part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness has been closed due to a wildfire. The Shell Lake Fire has burned about half an acre so far and is thought to be human-caused. The fire has the potential to spread, leading to restricted access in the area. The Superior National Forest has closed the Sioux-Hustler Trail Loop, Agawato Lake, and two campsites on the eastern side of Shell Lake.

(Undated) – An extension specialist encourages farmers to consider manure when making fall fertilizer plans. Melissa Wilson with the University of Minnesota says manure contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sulfur, and micronutrients beneficial to crop health. Wilson says a manure nutrient analysis is important to know so you don’t overapply, which isn’t allowed in Minnesota anyway. She adds proper application rates to help protect the environment and improve farmer profitability.

(St. Paul, MN) — You may see more kids walking home from school today in Minnesota. This is the 28th annual Walk to School Day. MnDOT says more than 170 school districts and thousands of students are participating this year. Officials say it increases physical activity and can strengthen connections between families, schools, and communities.
