>>Sauk Rapids Man Sentenced in Fatal Pedestrian Accident
(Foley, MN) — A Sartell man has been sentenced after his pickup struck and killed a pedestrian in Sauk Rapids in July 2023. A Benton County judge gave 26-year-old Tyler Nies a stayed sentence of four years and nine months in prison. He must serve one year in the county jail and can serve that term on work release or through a sentence to serve if eligible.

(Cherry, MN) — The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating a school bus crash near Hibbing in St. Louis County. Sheriff Gordon Ramsay says 12 Cherry students were taken to the hospital after a car T-boned the bus this morning. All of the hospitalized student’s injuries are considered non-life-threatening. The St. Louis County School District bus driver was also taken to the hospital, but the severity of his injuries is unknown. The person who was driving the car involved in the crash was airlifted to a Virginia hospital with serious injuries.

(Mankato, MN) – On the campaign trail as the democratic vice president nominee, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has talked about his career as a teacher. Former colleague and current social studies teacher Aaron Miller says under Walz, public schools received a big boost. He says, “That money that was thrown out really just kind of helped us kind of catch up a little bit. Public school funding is a hornet’s nest of people demanding certain things.” In politics, Walz maintains strong support from unions, including the American Federation of Teachers, for actions like taking a hard stance against private school vouchers. But his opponents argue he kept schools closed for too long during the pandemic, subsequently hurting student test scores.

(Apple Valley, MN) – There’s a fundraiser tonight in Apple Valley to send Burnsville police officers to Washington, D.C., for the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall ceremony. The names of their fallen partners, Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge will be added to the Wall in May. Officers Elmstrand, Ruge, and Fire Paramedic Adam Finseth were killed in the line of duty in February. The event at Bogart’s Entertainment Center will include live music and a silent auction.

(St. Paul, MN) — Two St. Paul schools have closed today due to social media threats. Community School of Excellence and Hope Community Academy have closed to students. Police say they’re aware of the threats and do not believe they are credible or any campus occupants are in danger, but they will continue to monitor the case. This comes just one week after a school shooting in Georgia that killed four people and injured nine others.

(Minneapolis, MN) – Twins centerfielder Byron Buxton is expected to be back in the lineup for this weekend’s series against the Cincinnati Reds at Target Field. The team reinstated Buxton from the 10-day injured list today. The 30-year-old former All-Star missed 28 games with a hip injury. Buxton is hitting .275 with 16 home runs and 48 RBIs in 90 games for Minnesota this season. The Twins sent Austin Martin back to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Buxton on the roster.
