(Washington, DC) — Congresswoman Angie Craig says two fire departments in Minnesota’s 2nd District will share $8.9 million in federal grant funding. The Lakeville Fire Department will receive 5.6 million dollars to hire 15 full-time firefighters, and the South Metro Department is getting 3.3 million to hire eight firefighters. South Metro serves South St. Paul, West St. Paul, and the surrounding area. Craig says in a statement, “Ensuring Minnesota’s first responders have everything they need to keep our communities safe and healthy is my top priority.”

(Brookston, MN) — The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa celebrates the largest stocking of advanced fingerling lake sturgeon in history in the Upper St. Louis River. Officials released nearly 18 hundred sturgeons about eight inches long into the river Tuesday at the Brookston Boat Landing. The tribe says these healthy fish are expected to thrive and contribute to a robust year class in local waters. The St. Louis River in northeast Minnesota was once a natural habitat for sturgeon.

(Rochester, MN) — The City of Rochester is getting a one-point-five-million-dollar federal grant to make improvements to Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Park. The Department of the Interior says the Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership Program invests more than 254 million dollars in 54 projects in 24 states. Rochester Park and Rec officials say the funds will be used to add new restrooms, a picnic shelter, a splash pad area, a basketball court, security, and wi-fi to make the playground accessible. The federal grant program requires local matching dollars.

(Eagan, MN) — Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Jonathan Greenard (GRUH’-nard) is being honored as the N-F-C Defensive Player of the Week. Greenard had three sacks in Sunday’s 34-7 win over the Houston Texans at U-S Bank Stadium. He also had three tackles for loss against his former team. Twenty-seven-year-old Greenard signed with Minnesota this offseason, and former Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter went to the Texans. The 3-and-0 Vikings play the 2-and-1 Packers on Sunday in Green Bay.
