Larry Fitzgerald
After weighing the decision for a few weeks after the season, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald announced Wednesday that he will return to the Arizona Cardinals next season.
The 33-year-old Minneapolis native previously hinted that retirement was a possibility, but he told ESPN and the NFL Network that he will play another season.
Fitzgerald has one year remaining on his contract.
“Some things that were killing me late in the year are feeling back to normal for me,” Fitzgerald told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “That’s a relief. Also, my fire and desire to win and compete vs. the best still burns.”
Fitzgerald led the NFL with 107 catches this season, and his 1,023 receiving yards ranked 20th. He scored six touchdowns. The University of Pittsburgh product topped the century mark in receptions for the second year in a row and the fourth time in his career.
A 10-time Pro Bowl honoree, Fitzgerald leads all active players with 14,389 receiving yards, the ninth-best total in NFL history. Only five players are above 15,000.
He has topped 1,000 yards in eight seasons, and he has caught 10 or more touchdown passes in five seasons.
With Fitzgerald on board, the key remaining question for the Cardinals is whether quarterback Carson Palmer, 37, will commit to another year.
