Minnesota and 16 other states are suing the federal government, arguing it’s unconstitutional to add a citizenship question on census forms. Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson says Census Bureau directors appointed by presidents of both parties have not included a question about citizenship since 1950 out of concern it would result in an inaccurate count. The Trump administration say the question is critical to enforcing a federal law that protects minority voting rights. Opponents warn immigrants won’t return the forms out of fear and will be undercounted, leading to loss of representation in Congress and reduction in federal aid.
