Two have been charged in the shooting of a Minneapolis police officer last Friday on the city’s North Side. 19-year old Frederick Leon Davis of Minneapolis and 20-year-old Navaeh Page (nuh-VAY-uh) make their first appearance in Hennepin County court Wednesday. Davis is charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder, while Page has been charged with one count of aiding an offender after the fact. Around 8 P-M Friday, Officer Jacob Spies was hit in the shoulder by automatic gunfire while pursuing a robbery suspect who fled a traffic stop earlier that evening. Officer Spies was discharged from the hospital that night and is expected to make a full recovery.”

(Undated) — An air quality alert is in effect for northern Minnesota through 10 a-m tomorrow (Wed), in anticipation of wildfire smoke from the Northwest Territories of Canada that officials say is moving quickly across southern Manitoba towards the Minnesota border. The state Pollution Control Agency predicts heaviest smoke will be across the northwest corner of the state, but could reach as far south as Bemidji and as far east as Ely (EE-lee). Air quality is expected to reach the “red” category — unhealthy for everyone. Officials say another wave of smoke is expected to move back into northwest Minnesota by late Wednesday evening.

(Grand Marais, MN) — A body believed to be that of a missing man from southwest Minnesota has been recovered in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office says canoeists discovered the remains in the Brule Lake area of the B-W-C-A on Monday. They’re thought to be those of 32-year-old Justin Sperl from Marshall. The Minnesota B-C-A issued a missing person alert for Sperl last Thursday. Authorities made contact with Sperl Friday, and he reported being fine and said he was out canoeing. Sheriff Pat Eliasen called it a “terrible tragedy.” The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will officially identify the remains.

(Buffalo Lake, MN) — A golf course near Buffalo Lake southwest of the Twin Cities that was pummeled by mammoth hail last week will be re-opening Friday. Mike Knodel (kuh-NO-dul), owner and supervisor of Oakdale Golf Club says the hail was nothing like he’d ever seen in his lifetime:
“Baseball-sized plus and, yeah, it was a scary situation for a lot of people, especially if they got stuck out on the golf course — under carts, under shed roofs. Fortunately we escaped injuries, besides some minor cuts maybe.” Knodel says with the help of an army of volunteers they’re cleaning up the course and trying to repair pock-marked greens.

(Marshall County, MN) — Sentencing for a man accused of beating his wife to death in front of his five children last August in northwestern Minnesota’s Marshall County is delayed after a judge withdrew his guilty plea, saying the victim’s family hadn’t been notified of the plea agreement ahead of time, as required by state law. Anders Odegaard will have a psychological exam Friday and there will be no further hearings until the exam is complete.

(Mankato, MN) — A 66-year-old Mankato man is dead after being struck by a vehicle while on foot in Mankato Monday night. Public Safety officers say they responded to the fatal crash around 9:30 p.m. The victim was identified as Jeffrey Ward and the driver, 18-year-old Kaylee Richmond of Mankato, is being charged with criminal vehicular homicide.

(Ideal Township, MN) — A 14-year-old boy is dead after drowning at Star Lake in Crow Wing County. Deputies responded to a report of a missing 14-year-old male who fell off a paddleboard, into the water, and never resurfaced. Individuals on scene pulled the boy from the water and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The juvenile is identified as Stanley Wilson of Encinitas, California.

(Minneapolis, MN) — Former Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook plans to sign a one-year deal worth up to $8.6 million to play offense with the New York Jets. Cook is coming off a season where started every game for the first time in his career, finishing with 1,173 yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry. With Cook’s leave, Alexander Mattison is expected to start for the Vikings this season.

Cake bakery Nothing Bundt Cakes is coming to Mall of America later this year, announced Tuesday. The MOA storefront marks the first-ever mall location for the Dallas-based company. The company says they’re on track to open 100 new bakeries in 2023 and recently crossed over 500 stores in the US. The MOA location will be owned and operated by Minnesota resident Kim Casen, who already operates Nothing Bundt Cake franchises in Minnetonka, Eagan and Eden Prairie.
