Minnesota’s share is 30-thousand dollars in the settlement of a multi-state lawsuit against an Indiana company for a medical data breach. Medical Informatics Engineering, M-I-E, has agreed to pay a total of 900-thousand dollars to 16 states, plus take a variety of steps to safeguard patient information in the future. The state alleges M-I-E did not implement basic data security measures accepted by the industry, and hackers stole electronic Protected Health and personal identifying information of over eight thousand Minnesotans. State officials say even after discovering the breach, the company waited almost two months before it began notifying patients that their sensitive information had been exposed — a violation of state law. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced the settlement Thursday.
