A Colorado-based nonprofit that claimed it helped veterans has agreed to shut down following a Minnesota court order requested by state Attorney General Lori Swanson. Swanson says the T-R-E-A Memorial Foundation promised that donations would be used to buy phone cards for military servicemembers and their families — but she says the organization “did not purchase a single card to veterans or their families for years”, while collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions from Minnesotans. T-R-E-A has 60 days to pay 400-thousand dollars to legitimate veteran support groups in Minnesota and 90 days to close up shop. Swanson says “charities that take advantage of the desire to give back to service members, veterans, and their families using deception have no place in Minnesota.”
