At noon today in Saint Paul, Minnesota’s ten electors will cast their votes for president of the United States. Minnesota’s electors are required by state law to vote for the candidate who received the highest number of popular votes in the state. In Minnesota it was Hillary Clinton, who beat Donald Trump by 44,765 votes in Minnesota. Clinton also won the *national* popular vote, but Trump will become president because he received the necessary number of electoral votes. Today’s final step in the election of the president is prompting Saint Paul Representative John Lesch and other lawmakers to propose Minnesota join other states in a national compact which would effectively bipass the Electoral College and elect future presidents by popular vote.
