The Minnesota House Tuesday afternoon passed a bill to make Minnesota drivers licenses comply with federal REAL ID requirements. Bill sponsor, Maple Grove Republican Dennis Smith says ” This is a good solution. Minnesotans have asked us to fix this problem.”
But the House and Senate bills are different, and South Saint Paul Democrat Rick Hansen says, “With a few days left of session here, it’s gonna be very difficult to come back in a version that can pass both houses and implement REAL ID.”
The House bill would allow Minnesotans to choose either a REAL-ID-complaint drivers license which they could use to board airplanes and enter federal facilities, or they could have a second type of license if they didn’t need that access.
