Minnesota has its third travel-related case of measles in less than six weeks, and state officials are asking metro area health care providers to be alert for patients with symptoms and ask about their travel history. The latest measles case is in a 24-month-old child who recently returned from the Middle East, where the illness is common. Officials say they’re notifying people who might have been exposed, but they say the number of exposures appears to be limited and risk to the public is low. Health officials are urging Minnesotans to make sure they and their families are up-to-date on vaccinations before they travel. Large measles outbreaks are occurring in a number of areas, including Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and South America. Measles is highly contagious and in some situations can lead to hospitalization and even death.
