It looks like Minnesotans will have an extra two years beyond this October to get REAL ID-compliant drivers licenses. Minnesota Public Safety Department spokesman Bruce Gordon says because the federal government informed the state that it’s making necessary progress to comply with REAL ID, “It means that Minnesotans should be able to use their standard drivers license or identification cards for domestic air travel or access to federal facilities until 2020” — specifically until October 1st, 2020. The Minnesota Legislature has mandated that new REAL ID licenses be available by October 1st of this year. A driver who wants a REAL ID before their standard license expires would pay an early renewal fee, and an additional four years would be added to the expiration date of their license.
