The niece of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior was keynote speaker Wednesday at an anti-abortion rally near the Planned Parenthood clinic in Moorhead. Doctor Alveda King told a crowd of about 200, “As Planned Parenthood continues to celebrate 100 years of hurting women, and then many years since 1973 of killing babies legally in America, we are saying, ‘no more.’” Officials at Planned Parenthood say that organization “has a proud history of social justice and believes in helping all individuals, regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation, make informed decisions about their reproductive health care.
King says her uncle, Doctor Martin Luther King Junior, once said, “The Negro cannot win if he’s willing to sacrifice the futures of his children for immediate personal comfort and safety…. He said, when you value the human personality, you won’t kill anybody.” But some question whether King is accurately representing her uncle’s view on abortion, saying an extensive search of his public and private statements revealed no direct commentary on the topic.
