In the wake of this weekend’s deadly mass shooting in Texas, and recent murders in Shakopee and Minneapolis, the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women’s Safia Khan says nearly three decades of data shows there are connections between domestic abuse and gun violence and “we’ve had about half of our domestic violence homicides involve firearms. That is something that we have tracked since the beginning of our data collection and there is plenty of research out there that shows there is a serious link between domestic violence and firearms. In addition, Khan says research shows that “having a firearm in a house in an abusive relationship can increase the risk of fatality by the victim by 500%.” Khan is urging abuse victims, or those who know of someone experiencing violence in a relationship to call the Day One help hotline at 866-223-1111.
